The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy adventure applauded and adored by millions of kids and adults around the world. J.R.R. Tolkien’s massive creation took form with Peter Jackson’s immaculate direction and flawless portrayal of characters by the cast and crew to assume a colossal form larger than life. The Trilogy is perhaps the most ambitious film projects with an enormous overall budget of $281 million. All three films were shot simultaneously and the entire project spanned eight years. If these aren’t inconceivable facts, there are a thousand more little-known facts about the project that make a surprising, interesting and fascinating read.

1. Sean Connery to play Gandalf
Can you imagine a different cast for the trilogy? While it is tough to visualize, the cast might have been different if things had not observed a change or denial. To begin with, Sean Connery was offered the role of Gandalf; but there were a couple of reasons he turned it down. But the most ridiculous and surprising of reasons is when he stated that he couldn’t understand the script. Christophe Lee declared his desire to play the wizard but unfortunately his age related limitations of the role held a restriction and so he moved on to play Saruman the White.

2. Smeagol’s character portrayal
Do you remember the character of Smeagol? Andy Serkis is the face behind the interesting face of Smeagol. Looks like Andy seems to find himself fascinated towards all things non-human. Let’s give your memory a little rewind to the film ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’. The role of Caesar, the Ape was portrayed by Andy Serkis. Hope Andy has many more such non-human adventures since he seems to be at ease and successful there.

3. Surfing goes wrong
New Zealand, where most of the film was shot, is a place that fascinated not just the film makers for sets but also the cast and crew for a lot fancier things to do. Most of the members of the Fellowship attempted surfing in the challenging waves of New Zealand’s seas in their spare time. One amongst the group was Viggo Mortenson who sustained injuries that bruised one side of his face completely beyond repair by makeup. But Peter Jackson continued to film the Mines of Moria scene from just the good side of his face.
